These are some of the key challenges detailed in\u00a0FRA\u2019s\u00a0Fundamental\u00a0Rights\u00a0Report\u00a02025. The\u00a0report\u00a0provides telling evidence of\u00a0fundamental\u00a0rights\u00a0under threat across Europe, a wake-up call for Member States and EU Institutions. With 2025 proving to be even more challenging, they must prevent the erosion of\u00a0rights\u00a0and stop democratic backsliding.<\/strong><\/p><p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/fra.europa.eu\/en\/publication\/2025\/fundamental-rights-report-2025\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/fra.europa.eu\/en\/publication\/2025\/fundamental-rights-report-2025&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1749644857408000&amp;usg=AOvVaw1BKa-lMi9wcWtxmdQ-xdZB\">Fundamental\u00a0Rights\u00a0Report\u00a02025<\/a>\u00a0focuses on key\u00a0fundamental\u00a0rights\u00a0developments and gaps in the EU in 2024. These include:<\/p><ul><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Threats to democracy:<\/strong>\u00a0disinformation and misinformation, the growing use of AI and harmful rhetoric threatened free and fair elections across the EU.<\/li><\/ul><ul style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><li><strong>Widespread violence against women:<\/strong>\u00a01 in 3 women in the EU still experiences gender-based violence.<\/li><li><strong>Pervasive discrimination, racism and rising hate<\/strong>\u00a0<strong>online<\/strong>: Muslims, Jews, Black people and LGBTIQ people face increasing levels of discrimination, hate and racism. Harassment, hate speech and physical violence are a growing concern.<\/li><li><strong>Ill treatment of migrants:<\/strong>\u00a0the EU issued new migration and asylum rules. Reports of\u00a0rights\u00a0violations along EU borders continued in 2024 and over 3,500 people died or went missing at sea.<\/li><\/ul><ul><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>New digital regulations:\u00a0<\/strong>the EU\u2019s efforts to regulate online platforms and artificial intelligence (AI) are an important step for the protection of\u00a0fundamental\u00a0rights. The Digital Services Act and the AI Act are key measures to curb illegal and harmful online content, disinformation, and the impact of discriminatory algorithms, but strong and consistent enforcement will be essential to ensure that technology respects human\u00a0rights.<\/li><\/ul><p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To overcome such challenges,\u00a0FRA\u00a0calls on the EU and its Member States to:<\/p><ul style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><li><strong>Ensur<\/strong><strong>e fair, transparent and safe elections<\/strong>: provide sufficient resources to implement and enforce EU laws to guard against electoral manipulation online. Effectively tackle threats of violence and intimidation during elections.<\/li><li><strong>Protect women from violence<\/strong>: enhance support to victims by improving reporting channels and enable women to come forward. Train frontline staff like the police and doctors in providing victim-appropriate services. Tackle the rise of cyberviolence by properly enforcing the Digital Services Act (DSA) and the Directive on Combating Violence Against Women and Domestic Violence.<\/li><li><strong>Tackle all forms of racism<\/strong>: act to tackle rising racism, antisemitism and anti-Muslim hatred. Collect data to feed into EU and national anti-racism laws and policies. Provide a safer online space for all and act against online hate.<\/li><li><strong>Strengthen\u00a0fundamental\u00a0rights\u00a0safeguards at borders<\/strong>: improve search and rescue practices to save lives at sea. Provide safer conditions for processing new arrivals. Investigate reports of\u00a0rights\u00a0violations and establish independent monitoring mechanisms at the EU\u2019s external borders.<\/li><\/ul><ul><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Reinforce\u00a0rights\u00a0protection online:\u00a0<\/strong>assess and monitor the impact of AI on\u00a0fundamental\u00a0rights. Improve awareness of potential AI biases. Geopolitical tensions, rising intolerance and threats to election integrity are testing the resilience of our democratic institutions. At the same time, calls for simplification and deregulation risk undermining the vital safeguards that protect people\u2019s\u00a0rights. This is a wake-up call for the EU and EU countries to reaffirm their commitment\u00a0&#8211;\u00a0we need to act decisively to ensure\u00a0fundamental\u00a0rights\u00a0remain at the core of all EU policies and actions.\u201d<\/p><p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The\u00a0Fundamental\u00a0Rights\u00a0Report\u00a02025 provides a comprehensive overview of the state of\u00a0fundamental\u00a0rights\u00a0in the EU.
