Volunteer position at the European Policy Institute - Skopje (EPI)

European Policy Institute (EPI) - Skopje needs a committed volunteer to support projects that are in the process of implementation. The announcement is open until 07.06.2017.

The duration of the engagement is up until 3 months depending on the pace of implementation of the planned activities. The compensation will be made pursuant to the Law for volunteers.

As conditions for volunteering EPI cites the following:

  • ● Graduate studies degree (legal, political, economic sciences);
  • ● Solid knowledge of English; preferably knowledge of Albanian;
  • ● Solid knowledge of Microsoft Office (especially working with Excel);
  • ● Ability to work and function in teams.

EPI provides a stimulating environment to the volunteers to upgrade their knowledge on European issues and the implementation of EU projects through their involvement in all activities of the Institute and by providing mentoring during their volunteering.

Fostering sustainable reintegration of Roma returnees in Macedonia
In the course of January -December 2017, the European Policy Institute and the Association of citizens KHAM Delcevo are implementing a project Fostering sustainable reintegration of Roma returnees in Macedonia. The project is financed by the Think Tank Fund of the Open Society Foundations and the Roma Information Office. The objective of the project is to contribute to ensuring sustainable reintegration of Roma returnees by identifying barriers to accessing basic rights and services and support efforts for creating sustainable reintegration conditions for Roma returnees; and advocating for the design of appropriate reintegration assistance to empower Roma returnees or at least minimize their vulnerability.
The project will look into the problems of reintegration of Roma asylum seekers upon their return in Macedonia. Roma returnees’ needs and key challenges coupled with institutional barriers to reintegration will be assessed in order to shed light on how to ensure satisfactory living conditions and quality of life for the returnees based on their actual needs. Inadequate policies and practices will be detected, serving as a basis for devising policy options and making advocacy efforts for achieving sustainable reintegration process- the change that this project aims to achieve.
For the purposes of the project we are interested in employing a Roma fellow and to provide him/her with on-the-job training in policy research and advocacy. This individual will work full-time at the EPI's offices for the duration of the project (May 2017 - December 2017, with a possibility of a four month extension). During this period, the fellow is expected to assist in the work on the Fostering sustainable reintegration of Roma returnees in Macedonia project and develop a related concrete policy product (such as a policy paper, briefs, newsletters, manage a blog, etc.) depending on personal interest under supervision and mentorship from both organisations.
Candidates must fulfill the following requirements:
- Be of Roma origin, and a citizen or permanent resident of the R. Macedonia;
- Have graduated in the past three years from BA or (preferably) MA studies in social sciences, law, sociology or a related topic
- Demonstrate interest in social science research, without necessarily having previous experience with policy research and advocacy;
- Demonstrate interest in migration and visa policies of the European Union;
- Good command of written and spoken English language;
- Skilled for data processing and research;
- Communication skills & proactive approach with highly organizational skills.

Call for proposal for youth researchers – Building the next generation of youth leaders

European Policy institute – EPI, together with Youth Educational Forum are implementing the project “Building the next generation of youth leaders”, the project is founded by Center for International Private Enterprise – CIPE. The aim of the project is to engage a core group of young Macedonian leaders in civic participation and entrepreneurial activity, and increase informed public discourse of key democratic and economic issues.

The project will support four research papers. The research papers will be prepared by youth research fellows and will be mentored by experienced EPI researchers.  The research fellows should be university seniors, recent graduates and postgraduates (aged 21 to 26 years-old).

The interested fellows should address the following topics:

  • ●  underlying factors to the youth brain drain,
  • ●  an assessment of available and untapped opportunities for youth entrepreneurship
  • ●  resources and toolkits for young people to navigate the Macedonian job market,
  • ●  analysis of the business environment for potential young entrepreneurs,  and
  • ● other democratic and economic issues related with youth unemployment and leadership potential—both entrepreneurial and civic. 

The research findings will be presented on high level round table that will be attended by the key policy makers and stakeholders.

For this purpose, the European Policy Institute, invites all interested youth researchers in Macedonia with relevant research experience in the field to submit a study proposal. The research papers should address concrete problems of the foregoing fields of interests. The papers will be further developed with the help of the experienced researchers form the European Policy Institute that will cooperate the research fellows for further development of the proposed methodology and to determinate relevant research indicators. Youth research fellows will receive training on conducting field and desk research, qualitative and quantitative methods, data collection and analysis.

Seventy-five copies of the youth research fellows’ research papers will be made available in hard copy in multiple languages (Macedonian, Albanian, and English) for distributed to the public and the key stakeholders and at the roundtable, which in return will contribute to a wider dissemination. The research papers will also be published by EPI, YEF, and CIPE on their websites and circulated widely via social media and email to their networks.

The selected researchers should submit the papers six months from the day of signing of the contract. The  papers should be written in Macedonian or Albanian, and later will be  translated. Each of the studies should have between 5000 and 7000 words. They should contain:

  • ●  Summary;
  • ●  Literature overview;
  • ●  Methodology;
  • ●  Discussion on the findings of the research;
  • ●  Conclusion;
  • ●  Bibliography.

Oxford style of referencing should be used. There will be honoraria of 600 USA per research.

The interested candidates should submit their research proposals, along with a short CV (max. 2 pages) to the European Policy Institute (, no later than 20 September 2016. The proposal for research paper can be submitted individually or by a group of researchers. [1]The research proposals should be between 500-700 words and should include:

The proposals shall be selected on the basis of the relevance of the topic, the quality of the summary, and the consistency of the methodology, as well as the professional experience of the researcher.

Call for Papers: Improving Performance of Public Administration: Current Experiences and Future Perspectives

Interested researchers and practitioners are invited to submit papers for presentation at the conference Improving Performance of Public Administration: Current Experiences and Future Perspectives to be held in Belgrade, Serbia 9-10 September 2015. The Conference is organised by the Think for Europe Network (comprising the European Policy Centre, Belgrade, European Policy Institute, Skopje and Institute Alternative, Podgorica).
